David Archuleta Shares His “Melodies of Christmas”
by IAN DREW
Us Weekly’s music editor, Ian Drew, talks with David Archuleta about his heartfelt holiday album!
American Idol alum David Archuleta loves Christmas — so much so that he decided to follow up his self-titled debut album with Christmas From the Heart.
The Season 7 runner-up, 18, talks to Usmagazine.com about the motivation behind his sophomore CD, what inspired him to write a brand-new Christmas song and his recommendations for your holiday party playlist!
Why did you decide to record a Christmas album?
For me, Christmas music has always been such a big time in my life. Ever since I was little, I was just into Christmas music. We used to go around Christmas caroling with Santa hats on, and I did that whole thing, and it was really fun… That’s always been my time to sing. Now it’s like, ‘Whoa! The songs that I’ve been singing every year since I was a little kid — now I get to make an album?’
What has the experience been like?
I never imagined that I would be able to really do a Christmas album like this, to this extent, where I have my own arrangements of these songs that I’ve been singing. It’s just so cool. And it’s like, ‘Wow, no one else sings it this way except for me, and it’s on an album and it’s released.’ It’s just really amazing to see that from where I would sing acapella when I was little at retirement homes and hospitals and neighbor’s houses to now being able to put them on an album.
How did you choose the songs?
Some of them were songs that I’ve sung or I used to sing. So that’s what’s cool. And [the producers] went to Prague for some of these arrangements to have a Prague orchestra, and it was just so cool. It’s just exciting to have some of the songs like “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” and “O Holy Night.” Just those songs — that’s what I grew up singing.
What inspired “Melodies of Christmas,” the song you wrote yourself?
It sums up what I feel Christmas music can do for people. It talks about how all the different melodies of Christmas bring back memories. When people hear Christmas songs, it reminds them of things. It reminds me of having dinner with my family, just celebrating opening presents and this family trip that we had during the holidays.
Which songs from your Christmas album are a must for any holiday party playlist?
The Trans-Siberian orchestra song. I love that one. It’s so big and powerful.
How do you spend Christmas?
We actually used to put on some Christmas shows with me and my brothers and sisters and cousins, and we used to just go out and bike at retirement homes and hospitals and just put on shows for people who might feel kind of left out and forgotten about because they’re in the hospital or places where they might be alone. For the actual holiday, usually we’ll go to my grandpa’s, but we went to Las Vegas last year. We went to get away because I had not been home all year, and I’d just been so busy with so many different things. It was finally my break to be back with my family. It’s so important to spend time with the people you care about.
What are your favorite Christmas albums to give as gifts?
Mariah Carey is great. She’s an amazing singer and has such a big voice. My mom listened to Celine Dion a lot when I was little. I always heard Natalie Cole’s “The First Noel,” too. She’d sing that a lot. Natalie Cole was a big influence!

David Archuleta & Katharine McPhee Perform On Larry King
Both with new albums to promote, David Archuleta & Katharine McPhee performed Christmas songs during Larry King Live’s holiday special last night. So, who’s stalking who here? (jk!) They both did well, but I’m particularly excited about having a televised performance of “Pat-A-Pan” from Mr. Archuleta. David’s Christmas From The Heart is out now, while Katharine’s sophomore album Unbroken drops January 5th. Thanks for reminding me that I need to listen to your album, Kat!

David Archuleta Performs “Melodies Of Christmas” On Regis & Kelly
The machine known as David Archuleta kept that Christmas promotion going, err, spirit alive with a performance of his very own “Melodies Of Christmas” on Live With Regis & Kelly. He sounded great & with all that recent touring & it being a morning show, I simply don’t know how! (lol) I’d also like to mention that I finally got (my mom to sit down long enough) to finish David’s Billboard concert & WOW! That second half with the classic Christmas songs & those strings accompanying him was simply breathtaking. I’ll for sure be pulling out my Christmas From The Heart CD to enjoy as many more listens as possible before Christmas!

David Archuleta On Today
David Archuleta did right by his holiday album Christmas From The Heart with this appearance on the Today show, which included a showstopping performance of “Angels We Have Heard On High.” Let’s see, Archie… by my count, you went on three full-fledged tours, recorded this album, & began writing for your sophomore pop album this year. Sir, I believe you have earned the right to relax & enjoy your holiday!
David Archuleta performs on “Regis and Kelly” holiday episode
David Archuleta performed on Live With Regis & Kelly for their special holiday-themed episode.
Instead of doing a well-known Christmas jingle, David got personal and decided to sing a special song that he wrote about what Christmas has meant through his life, called Melodies of Christmas.
His parents must have been so happy to hear him put their family traditions into a song like that! Regis is on hiatus post-surgery so Kelly Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos guest hosted and put David on the spot by asking him about the best Christmas gift he ever got. When David paused Mark suggested he could also tell us about the worst gift he ever received. David dodged both bullets with tact and charm by saying he doesn’t really recall those details because he just remembers the time he spends with his family.
Now that is a boy who make any Mama proud!

Archuleta on Regis and Kelly show Dec. 22
For all of you David Archuleta fans, he will be appearing on the Regis & Kelly show on Tuesday, Dec. 22 (9 a.m. PST).
Here are a couple of thoughts about Archuleta and his recent CD “Christmas From The Heart” …
- No other AI participant, over the past couple of years anyway, is really capable of doing a Christmas CD that would be half as good as Archie’s and 90 percent of them shouldn’t even try.
- After listening to it more than once Idol Chatter must admit one thing – it is one of the best Christmas records out there. I’d even go so far as to say it’s one of the best, ever…

David Archuleta stopped by “Today” Monday morning to promote his new album, “Christmas from the Heart,” and gave a beautiful performance of “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Video below.
After regaling the hosts with memories of Christmases past, when David used to go caroling with his family in neighborhoods and nursing homes, he performs the classic Christmas carol “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
We particularly like the multiple key changes, spicing up the song past the typical version you usually hear. Whether or not you’re into the non-secular Christmas music, David Archuleta sure can sing.

Everyone’s favorite Cutebot-5000 turns in some sincere, warm Christmas classics on his new holiday album. We’re digging this duet, surprisingly.
Christmas from the Heart
by ISAAC ZULEN
This is David Archuleta’s first Christmas album featuring some of the classic songs such as Joy to the World, Silent Night, The First Noel, I’ll Be Home for Christmas and O Holy Night.
Archuleta’s vocals soar with passion when he sings some of these tunes. His rendition of the Spanish tune, Riu Chiu, especially touches the heart.
On Melodies of Christmas, Archuleta teams up with his dad, Jeff, who also produced and arranged the song.
An incredible duet of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas with up-and-coming Charice Pempengco is also featured here.
This album will put you in the festive mood.
Christmas from the Heart
by YVONNE TAN
THE affable winner of American Idol Season 7 serenades us with his takes on the great Christmas classics and then some, in this holiday album.
In Joy to the World, David Archuleta’s vocals are wispy and soothing, not exactly the nicest pop version I’ve heard but still good enough to put you into the mood.
On Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, he teams up with newcomer Charice Pempengco. It’s obvious whose vocals are stronger but their voices mesh well together and the result is a very sweet version of this old favourite.
Other strong tracks include classics The First Noel, Angels We Have Heard on High and Ave Maria. For variety, he even treats us to Spanish carol Riu Riu Chiu.
On most numbers, Archuleta is backed by simple strings and piano, creating a heartfelt, intimate vibe. This is not the CD for a happening Christmas party, rather, one for a relaxing family affai
Von The Oklahoma Daily:
American Idol’s Archuleta to perform at Sun Bowl
by Daily Staff Reports
American Idol runner-up David Archuleta will perform during the Helen of Troy Halftime Show at the Brut Sun Bowl on Dec. 31, according to Sun Bowl officials.
Archuleta, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on Dec. 28, was the runner-up on the seventh season of American Idol. In August 2008, his self-titled album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
“Helen of Troy is excited to bring another outstanding talent like David Archuleta to perform at halftime of the Brut Sun Bowl,” said Gerald J. Rubin, CEO and president of Helen of Troy, in a press release. “David piqued America’s interest during his run on American Idol and he definitely will be a fan favorite due to his extraordinary talents as a singer-songwriter.”
The Helen of Troy Halftime Show will feature a performance by Archuleta, as well as The Pride of Oklahoma and the Stanford University marching band.
Previous Sun Bowl halftime performers have included Los Lonely Boys, Diamond Rio, Baby Bash, Rihanna and the Village People.
Field level performance tickets
Fans attending the Sun Bowl Fan Fiesta at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center on Dec. 30 will have an opportunity to win field level tickets for the halftime performance, Sun Bowl officials said. The first 300 fans between ages 10 and 17 who present their Sun Bowl game ticket at the Fan Fiesta will receive a sideline access pass for the halftime show.
“Basically, we want to give 300 lucky fans the opportunity to have a front row seat to the Helen of Troy Halftime Show,” said Bernie Olivas, executive director of the Sun Bowl Association, in a press release. “It also allows David to engage his fans on a more personal level.”

Sun Bowl Halftime
by AMY ARSENAULT
The Brut Sun Bowl, known for its family-friendly halftime shows, invites David Archuleta, former “American Idol” and teen pop star.
Archuleta became a household name at 16 when he made his stint as one of the youngest competitors during the seventh season of “Idol.” Now, three years later, he will perform before a potential 50,000 fans at a halftime show presented by Helen of Troy.
Among those will be plenty of teenyboppers who appreciate Archuleta hits like “Crush.” The Sun Bowl committee announced a special opportunity for young fans of Archuleta’s.
“Basically, we want to give 300 lucky fans the opportunity to have a front row seat … It also allows David to engage his fans on a more personal level,” said Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas on the game website.
How do they win those exclusive sideline seats? They have to be between the ages of 10 and 17, and they have to attend the Sun Bowl Fan Fiesta at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30.
The ticket giveaway is especially fitting because many credit Archuleta’s personal touch for boosting him to a runner-up finish in the seventh season of “American Idol,” with 44 percent of the finale votes. The singer says a personal touch inspires his own writing.
“I want to be as real as I can with the songs,” he recently told Live Daily. “Writing is the best way to get your personality and your character into the song.”
Since the culmination of the show, Archuleta’s debut album premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 and has sold approximately 900,000 copies worldwide. His mass appeal among young people was recognized by Nickelodeon, which honored him with a Teen Choice Award for “Most Fanatic Fans” in 2008.
With Archuleta, the Brut Sun Bowl committee continues its trend of bringing family-friendly acts to the bowl game. Performers for the halftime show over the last few years have included mass-appeal artists such as the Village People (2008) and Rihanna (2007, just months before songs like “Umbrella,” “Disturbia” and “Don’t Stop The Music” brought her to new levels of fame).
“David piqued America’s interest during his run on ‘American Idol,’ and he definitely will be a fan favorite due to his extraordinary talents as a singer-songwriter,” said Gerald Rubin, CEO and president of Helen of Troy.
Archuleta gained his singer-songwriter talents as a child. At an early age his mother, a native of Honduras, influenced him with salsa music and Spanish rhythms. She also encouraged him to perform locally, in their hometown of Miami, with his four siblings.
Archuleta had found his calling. Ask what his dream job is in Seventeen magazine, he replied, “To be doing what I am now, only more developed and have more experience in this. But this is my dream job, that’s what’s funny about it! I never thought I’d be here. I’m in the recording studio right now, just looking at the mics and the headphones and it’s crazy!”
Archuleta, who has been busy cultivating his dream career, is currently on the road promoting his debut Christmas album, “Christmas from the Heart.” The 17-city tour will wrap up little more than a week shy of his 19th birthday and the Helen of Troy halftime show performance.
