The Detroit News: “David Archuleta mit neuer CD & Konzert in Ann Arbor”

27 Nov

Adam Graham von den Detroit News führte mit David ein Telefoninterview, hier sein Artikel:

David Archuleta has new CD out and concert in Ann Arbor
by Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer

It’s been Christmas since July for David Archuleta.

The seventh season “American Idol” runner-up went into the studio over the summer to record “Christmas from the Heart,” his second studio album and his first Christmas set. The album was released in October, and on Friday he performs a holiday concert with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at Hill Auditorium.

When settling on which songs to record for the album, he decided staples such as “O Holy Night,” “Joy to the World” and “Silent Night” had to be in the mix. They were songs he’s been singing since he was a little kid, he says.

“(My siblings and I) would go Christmas caroling, we’d go to hospitals and retirement homes together, sometimes we’d just go around the neighborhood and sing,” says Archuleta, on the phone last week. “Anything that was around for me to sing at.”

He added to those standbys with “Christmas from the Heart,” which includes songs sung in French (“Pat-a-pan”) and Spanish (“Riu Riu Chiu”). The traditional “Ave Maria” is sung in Latin.

“I’ve never spoken Latin or French in my life until I had to learn the words to those songs and record them,” says Archuleta, 18. “I really enjoyed it, it was something new to add to the album, a way of connecting to different people.”

The album also includes one original, “Melodies of Christmas,” about the memories people intertwine with Christmas songs. It was a last-minute addition to the album, Archuleta says.

It was also last minute when Archuleta learned “Christmas from the Heart” would share a release date with the extremely similarly titled “Christmas in the Heart,” Bob Dylan’s seasonal offering. Archuleta laughs and says the similarities are “coincidental” and says he hasn’t yet heard the Dylan record.

Archuleta — who counts Celine Dion’s “These Are Special Times” and “The Jackson 5 Christmas Album” among his favorite holiday records — says after wrapping the Christmas tour he’s heading into the pre-production on his next album in early 2010. He’s been working with some writers from Nashville but isn’t sure how the album will shape up.

“We’ll see what kind of directions the songs go,” he says.

Deseret News’ Konzertrezension für die zweite Show in Salt Lake City

27 Nov

Auch für David’s zweites Konzert in Salt Lake City gibt es eine schöne Kritik – diesmal in den Deseret News:

Archuleta ushers in sounds of Christmas
by Carma Wadley

David Archuleta may have finished as runner-up to the 2008 “American Idol,” but he’s clearly No. 1 in the hearts and minds of his hometown fans — especially those gathered at Abravanel Hall Wednesday as the young singer kicked off his Christmas tour.

From the reaction Archuleta got before he even stepped on stage, he probably could have stood up there and sung the phone book, and no one would have cared. But he didn’t, of course. Rather, he put on a stellar show that showcased his range and ability, paid homage to his pop success and captured the spirit of the season.

Archuleta started off the program with a set of some of his pop favorites, including “Waiting for Yesterday,” “Crush” and “Zero Gravity.” He debuted a new song called “The Riddle,” which is all about why we are here, he said, and which was very well-received by the audience.

He gave a beautiful rendition of “Fields of Gold,” a song he first heard when Michelle Kwan skated to it at the 2002 Olympics; and also served up a moving version of Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children.”

But Christmas didn’t wait in the wings for very long, and with a small orchestra and dramatic lighting effects, Archuleta welcomed in the “Melodies of Christmas,” starting with a song of that title that he co-wrote for his new CD.

It was followed by a variety of traditional carols and songs, including the French “Pat-a-pan,” the Spanish “Riu Riu Chiu” and the English “What Child Is This?”

He was joined by his mother for a beautiful, harmonic duet of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and Bestor joined him on stage at the piano for a powerful rendering of “Ave Maria,” which Bestor arranged.

Striking versions of “Silent Night” and “O Holy Night” were also part of the program.

Archuleta demonstrated a confident and endearing stage presence, clearly having a good time with his hometown fans. Even more, he showed an ability to convey emotion and feeling as well as strength and musicality. He combines a powerful voice with a youthful vitality that is both engaging and impressive.

The night got off to a lively, energetic start with another Utah singer, Benton Paul, from Highland. He sang a few of his hits, including “Look for the Light” and “Paris” before shifting into the holiday mode with a beautiful “Still, Still, Still.”
